The Dickinson Economic Development Corporation (DEDC) is excited to announce a new project that will benefit our City and our region. We are in the process of creating the “Gulf Coast Public Market” right here in Dickinson on publicly owned property across Highway 3 from City Hall and the Dickinson Library all the way down to the Dickinson Bayou. The Gulf Coast Public Market will serve the shopping needs of all Texans, especially Dickinson residents and regional shoppers from Houston to Galveston
The Public Market will harness the entrepreneurial spirit of Texan residents by creating scores of new private businesses which will focus primarily on the sale of fresh foods rounded out by the showcasing of Texan crafts and prepared foods. The Market’s tenants will include stores, stalls, carts and daytables. The Market will be tied to the Bayou by a landscaped meandering path adjoined by exciting amenities attractive to children, teens and families. In addition to approximately 30,000 square feet of new retail space, the Market will include a variety of new public amenities such as a water park, entertainment plaza, basketball court, and a revamped public access to the Bayou.
Dickinson was ground zero for the devastating impacts of Hurricane Harvey, with numerous deaths and overwhelming destruction of homes and businesses caused by a 13 foot wall of water. Without proper intervention, Dickinson risks entering long term economic stagnation amidst a dispirited community. The Public Market will address these issues by providing new vibrant public spaces for residents to appreciate, and shopping venues and significant economic opportunities for the community to enjoy. The Public Market will generate millions in new state and local tax revenues. By offering hundreds of new long term jobs and scores of entrepreneurial opportunities, the Public Market will give Dickinson the resources to rebuild into an even stronger community.
Every time Dickinson residents leave Dickinson to buy food, gifts or enjoy a restaurant, they are contributing jobs, taxes, and opportunities to someone else’s community. Every time our children decide that they cannot return to our community because there are few jobs and opportunities, we all lose. The Public Market will provide an opportunity for us to support our neighbors while enjoying a vital community asset. The Public Market will create a regional attraction and showcase unique Texan products in order to revitalize Dickinson. It will be integral to creating a new downtown which proudly respects and protects the qualities that make Dickinson special.
As currently planned, no new City of Dickinson tax revenues are anticipated to be needed to support the development of the Public Market.
